NASA Visits UVM with Robot and Joins VSGC in Honoring Vermont Scholars

An autonomous electronic robot developed to test NASA electronics, instruments and software for planetary exploration was on exhibit at UVM on Tuesday, October 14.  The Vermont Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) sponsored the visit to Vermont for a VSGC Awards Ceremony and Reception held Tuesday, October 13, 2009.  Guests included Governor James Douglas and President Daniel Fogel.   Faculty and students of the UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences and Norwich University discussed the possibility of future interaction with the NASA robotics mission.

NASA scientist, Dr. Eugene Waluschka was Guest Speaker. Waluschka, from the NASA Optics Group/The Goddard Space Flight Center, discussed the MODIS instruments currently in orbit on the Aqua and Terra spacecraft and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Waluschka’s work supports the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS). Waluschka joined Goodrich in1980 modeling and numerically simulating various phenomena and working with the builders of the Hubble Telescope.

Also present was NASA engineer Dr. Michael Comberiate, Systems Manager for NASA working at the Goddard Space Flight Center since 1969. Comberiate designs the electronics for NASA’s satellite projects and is responsible for linking across the continent of Antarctica using satellites, an historic first.

Dr. Faith Davis, RF Engineer in Robotics NASA Goddard Space Flight Center assisted with the remote operation of the robot through computer programming and data transmission. Drs. Davis and Comberiate created the robot along with student interns in the NASA Robotics Group at Goddard Space Flight Center. 

NASA Honorees

Benjamin Scaralia, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Benjamin Scaralia, of West Rutland, Vermont, graduate of Mount Saint Joseph Academy and rising senior at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was honored for his recent receipt of the “NASA John Mather Nobel Scholarship Award” given by the John and Jane Mather Foundation for Science and the Arts.  Scaralia is the first student from Vermont to receive this award and one of a total of 17 recipients -- several of which are international students.

The Foundation also awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize for Physics to Dr. Mather for his work on the “Big Bang” theory. The award was presented by Henry Foundation, Inc. to Scaralia for his work as a SAWDRIP Intern and Quantum Chemist with Dr. Igor Eberstein and Dr. William Ward, on a project formally titled “Quantum Mechanical Investigation of Planetary DOH/HOH” aimed at the study of atmospheric changes on the planet Venus.  Scaralia also developed a college-level physics program on Thermodynamics for NASA to be used on the Digital Learning Network during summer internship at NASA’s Goddard Space  Flight Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

 

Cameron Mercier, Middlebury College

Cameron Mercer, of Mondrose, Colorado and junior at Middlebury College was a speaker at this event.  Mercer received recognition as a NASA Intern in the NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP) for his work this summer at the Marshall Space Flight Center in the Operations Working Group supporting the operations and data analysis for the Mars Exploration Rovers Project, including geological analysis of rocks, Martian atmosphere monitoring and tactical planning within the Science Operations Working Group.

Several Vermont students were also honored by VSGC as NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Scholars, VSGC BTC -Aviation Technology Scholars, awardees for “SKILLS USA”, VSGC Native American Scholars,   NASA Student Interns and NASA Student Projects involved in International Competitions, the Autonomous Robotic Vehicle Team and Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Team, from Norwich University, the AERO Team from the UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences and  Undergraduate Research  Endeavors Competitive Awards (URECA). These students and projects are funded by VSGC.
