2009 AWARD RECIPIENTS In receiving these awards, you forge the way for
future scholars in these exiting and rewarding
programs. Good luck in your studies
and research, we look forward to interacting
with you on future projects!
The National Aeronautics
Space Administration (NASA) has awarded $1.5
million in research grants to two research
groups based in the
University of
Vermont’s College of Engineering
and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) to study topics
that are NASA research priorities. Each
research group has been awarded $750,000 over
three-years beginning September 1, 2009.
Prof. William D. Lakin of CEMS, Project Director
for
Vermont’s NASA
EPSCoR Program and Director of the Vermont Space
Grant Consortium (VTSGC), is the Principal
Investigator for both awards. CEMS is the
Home Unit for both VT-NASA EPSCoR and the VTSGC.
“The
University of Vermont is
proud to have NASA grant support for these
exciting research endeavors, which represent
incredible innovation on the part of our faculty
in CEMS,” says Interim Dean, Bernard “Chip”
Cole. “These research collaborations will not
only advance our abilities in space, but they
will improve life here on Earth as well.”
Kameron Harris, a Vermont
Space Grant Graduate Fellow, has just been awarded a
Fulbright Scholarship for study in Chile. Kameron
will be in Chile from March of 2010 to December of
2010 working with Andrés Moreira, Universidad Técnica
Federico Santa María, and Eric Goles, Instituto de
Sistemas Complejos de Valparaíso to develop
complex systems-based modeling techniques for
transportation. In January of 2011, Kameron will
return to Vermont to complete his graduate studies.
Kameron is a Vermont Scholar who has just received his
Bachelors degree from the University of Vermont.
This past year, Vermont Space Grant was pleased to
support Kameron's mentored undergraduate research
project in UVM's highly competitive URECA! Program.
This research led to Kameron's undergraduate thesis in
the UVM Honors College. Kameron decided to
stay at UVM for his graduate studies, and he was awarded
a Space Grant Graduate Fellowship. In our recently
completed GRA competition to work with Prof. Chris
Danforth of UVM and Dr. Robert F. Cahalan, Head of the
Radiation Branch at NASA Goddard. Kameron's
graduate research will develop an advanced technique to
predict regime changes in the chaotic convection with
applications to global climate. The ultimate goal
of this research is to develop a methodology capable of
improving weather forecasts and predicting regime
changes in the Earth’s climate (e.g. El Ni˜no Southern
Oscillation events) further in advance. Kameron's
graduate research will make extensive use of the cutting
edge facilities of the Vermont Advanced Computer Center,
a facility at UVM developed with NASA funding.
This summer, Prof. Danforth will be meeting with members
of the Modeling, Analysis, and Prediction Program
(MAP) at Goddard, as well as Tsengdar Lee, NASA High End
Computing Program Manager, to discuss the application of
this work to the data assimilation techniques being
developed for assimilation of observations in their
GEOS-5 global weather and climate model system.
The
Vermont Space Grant Consortium is pleased to
announce a competition for up to ten
undergraduate scholarships available for the
2008-2009 academic year. These Vermont Space
Grant Scholarships, each worth $1,500, will be
awarded on the basis of academic standing,
letters of recommendation, and an essay
detailing career goals. The scholarships are to
be used to help the recipients attend an
institution of higher education within the State
of Vermont.
The 16th Annual
Vermont Space Grant Consortium Award Ceremony &
Reception was held in
October 2008 to celebrate and honor accomplished
students who received awards. It is
always a pleasure to welcome Dave Rosage, PE, Director,
NASA Academy/Robotics Academy, NASA Office of Higher
Education at NASA Goddard Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD
as our Keynote speaker. Families of the awardees and
various distinguished guests were present. Congratulations to the 2008-2009
Scholarship Recipients
In receiving these awards, you
forge the way for future scholars in these exiting and
rewarding programs. Good luck in your studies and
research, we look forward to interacting with you on
future projects!

Burlington Aviation Technology School
in So. Burlington, VT.
A total award of $3000 in three awards of $1000 for each
student.
Congratulations to the Aviation Award recipients!
KARL NELSON - A second year recipient, and a resident of
Milton, Vermont, is currently enrolled in the BTC
Aviation Technology Program pursuing an Airframe and
Powerplant Certification. His many extra curricular
activities and programs include youth group band/chorus,
leadership retreats and a community service trip to
China Town in New York City. He would like to continue
his education in Aviation Engineering and feels the
training that the school provides is a great way for him
to get accustomed to what he will be doing in his
profession as an aircraft mechanic.
SCOTT THIBAULT - A first year recipient, and a resident
of Colchester, Vermont. Scott is currently enrolled in
the BTC Aviation Technology Program pursuing an Airframe
and Powerplant Certification. He hopes to use this
certification to work on aircrafts and eventually
continue his schooling to earn a bachelor’s degree in
Aeronautical Engineering. He also hopes to be able to
participate in the advances made possible through NASA’s
Aeronautics Research Mission, and to work in the field
to “close the gap between empirical and abstract
knowledge” (NASA).
Special Program Awards:
Skills USA: A national competition in which
Burlington Aviation Technology School
achieved 4th & 14th in the nation on

Regional Competition in Manchester, NH
Our team
did great throughout the three days of
competition. We played a total of 22
matches, with only minor modifications and
repairs required between competitions.
Following
the scheduled matches, our team was selected
for one of the eight play-off alliances.
Each alliance (one red & one blue) is
comprised of three teams, working together
to score points against the other alliance
teams. We succeeded in the quarter finals,
won the semi finals and moved on to the
final matches. Our alliance won the first of
the final matches, but came up short on the
second, which required the third match to be
played. We lost the final match, finishing
in second place with the silver medals and
the "finalist" trophy.
